Frequently Asked Questions
Do you do genetic testing on your breeding dogs?
We absolutely do this. All adult Bassets that are bred at Royal Baez Basset are genetically tested and free of Thrombopathia, Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Disease, X-Linked, Basset Hound Type (XSCID)
What is Thrombopathia?
Thrombopathia (basset hound type) is a bleeding disorder that is inherited. We do genetic testing to be sure our dogs do not have this and pass it down to their puppies. Thromboopathia affects the dog's platelet function. A Basset Hound with this will not have normal blood clotting because the platelets are not able stick properly to one another.
What is X-Linked, Basset Hound Type (XSCID)?
X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency (basset hound type) is an inherited disease affecting basset hounds. Dogs affected are unable to produce a protein that is important for their immune function. A dog with this could develop viral and fungal infections and this may be recurrent with the dog.
How often should I clean my Bassets ears.
You should be cleaning your basset hounds' ears weekly to keep the gunk out of it. Some basset hounds may need it done more often. This will help with your basset hound not getting ear infections. The basset hounds' ears are so big and long that it traps air.
What is Lafora
Lafora disease is an inherited form of epilepsy that can affect any breed but is known to be present in Miniature Wire-Haired Dachshunds, Beagles and Basset Hounds1. The disease is caused by the Epm2b gene mutation in dogs, which results in the intracellular accumulation of abnormal glycogen phosphatase laforin, a protein essential for making normal structured glycogen2. Affected dogs are not able to convert starch into sugar, so insoluble glycogen builds up in their cells into large accumulations called Lafora bodies here.
What is primary open angle glacoma.
Open-angle glaucoma in dogs is a painless chronic eye condition characterized by a slow loss of vision due to damage or abnormalities in the eye’s drainage canal1. It occurs when the ciliary body produces inadequate amounts of aqueous humor, a fluid that nourishes the eyes and maintains pressure within the eyes1. Primary open angle glaucoma in dogs is a rare type of glaucoma that is related to a mutation in the ADAMTS10 gene2. This mutation and consequent POAG is seen most often in Beagles
