Frequently Asked Questions about Basset Hound babies
Stress of the puppy entering a new home.
Watching your basset hound babies show signs of stress can be difficult for you. It is normal for a puppy to cry the first few nights in your home. The puppy has just left all his/her siblings and is now in very new surroundings. As time goes on this will get better and your puppy will begin to sleep through the night. Separation anxiety is a normal part of a puppy's life. Remember they are just babies. When you leave them alone you may notice crying or even destruction of your belongings. You puppy isn't intentionally trying to upset you but rather telling you they miss you. Leave a piece of your clothing with your basset hound puppies so they can smell you. Get them a friend. Be sure they have plenty of toys to play with.
Potty Training your Basset Hound.
Basset hounds are stubborn. They beat to their own drum, Potty training a basset hound may be difficult. Do not expect a puppy to be trained within the first 6 months as this may be unrealistic for you and the puppy. Patience and positive enforcement are key factors to training you Basset. Do not give up on you baby for having accidents. Know bassets are often driven by food and this may help with the potty-training aspect. Be sure to take your pup out 15-20 minutes after eating and drinking. If you do not have a doggie door, putting a bell on your door so your puppy can tell you they need to go out can be helpful. Again, positive praise for when they have done as you have asked. I have had basset hounds take as long as a year before being fully potty trained.
Our puppies are litter box trained to help you when taking them home.
What is Litter Box Training
We use pelletized bedding in our training for your puppies. Purchasing some of this will help your puppy know where to go. Place some of this outside and show this to your puppy. Most of our puppies can be fully potty trained within a month or so because of this process. You however need to work with your puppy to complete this task. Positive reinforcement works well and remember Bassets are very food driven. Give a treat when your baby does well!!!
