Frequently Asked Questions

Do you do genetic testing on your breeding dogs?

Absolutely.  All adult Bassets at Royal Baez Basset are fully health tested and cleared of Thrombopathia, Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Disease, X-Linked, Basset Hound Type (XSCID) and more.

What is Thrombopathia?

Thrombopathia (basset hound type) is a hereditary bleeding disorder found in some basset hounds. It affects how the dog's platelet's function, which can lead to dangerous clotting issues, We test all of our dogs to ensure no puppies inherit this condition.

What is X-Linked, Basset Hound Type (XSCID)?

X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency (basset hound type) is a rare inherited immune disorder found in some Basset Hounds. Dogs with XSCID are unable to produce a critical protein needed for normal immune function. This makes them highly susceptible to chronic viral and fungal infections and typically leads to severe illness early in life.

How often should I clean my Bassets ears.

You should be cleaning your basset hounds' ears once a week to prevent buildup of wax and moisture. Some Bassets may need more often depending on ear size and lifestyle. Regular cleaning helps prevent ear infections-especially since Basset ears are long, heavy, and trap moisture.

What is Lafora

Lafora disease is a heredity form of epilepsy that causes seizure. Its known to occur in Basset Hounds, Beagles, and Miniature Wire-Haired Dachshunds. Lafora is caused by a mutation in the Epm2b gene, which leads to abnormal sugar buildup in the brain. All of our breeding dogs are tested and cleared.

What is primary open angle glacoma.

Primary Open-angle glaucoma is a painful, inherited eye condition that causes gradual vision loss due to improper fluid drainage inside the eye. It can lead to blindness. We ensure our dogs are genetically tested to avoid passing this condition to our puppies.
